Bahria International Hospital (BIH) Cardiology Department has reached a remarkable milestone in cardiac treatment by becoming the first medical facility in Pakistan to successfully implement CE/MDR/ISO approved Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) technology. This innovative advancement in angioplasty and stenting offers a safer, more efficient option for treating coronary artery disease, according to a press release.
Professor Dr. Nauman Naseer, Director of the Cardiology Program at BIH, who led the IVL procedure, highlighted that the technology uses sonic pressure waves to break up hardened calcium deposits inside the walls of coronary arteries. This process allows arteries to be safely widened, restoring proper blood flow to the heart while lowering the risks typically associated with conventional techniques.
Dr. Farqad Alamgir, Co-Director of the Cardiology Program and Chairman CM’s standing committee for cardiac care elaborated that although IVL was originally designed for the treatment of kidney stones, it is now being effectively used in cardiology. By utilizing a specialized balloon catheter, the technique gently fractures calcium build-up in narrowed arteries, this minimizes trauma to the artery, and reduced complication rates compared to traditional drilling techniques.
