Infection prevention & control department conducted two days campaign on Scrub the hub on June 13-14, 2023 at Bahria Town International Hospital Bahria Town and Bahria Orchard Lahore. Target participants were doctors and nurses of intensive care units medical ICU, surgical ICU, Neonatal ICU, and cardiac ICU adult & Pediatric. Education posters were displayed and video on ‘Scrub the Hub” was installed in Infection & Prevention and control share folder on hospital information system Medix. What is Hub: Hub refers to the end of catheter that connects to the blood lines or infusions or cap. (Central lines catheter, pick lines and other catheter lines).
Why to scrub Hub: Cather hub is known source for catheter associated blood stream infection and needleless connectors are sources for microbial contamination.
When to scrub the Hub: Prior to assessing the line to administer medication, fluid flushes or blood draw.
Procedure of scrubbing the Hub:
- Hand Hygiene
- Wear gloves
- Use 70% alcohol swab and scrub in twisting movement (Don’t wipe) for 15 seconds.
- Allow the hub to air dry for 15 seconds
- Access the stopcock or infection port only with sterile devices
- Infuse medication or draw blood
- Discard gloves and perform hand hygiene.
